We really miss baseball. The MLB recently announced they will try to start the season in July, and even though it will be very different, we are looking forward to it. Meanwhile, yesterday we found ourselves watching the World Series – the 1975 World Series!
It was Game Seven, and the Cincinnati Reds were battling the Boston Redsox for the title. This was when the Reds team was stacked: The Big Red Machine!
The Reds team was unstoppable. Johnny Bench, Ken Griffey, Sr., Pete Rose, George Foster, Cesar Geronimo, Dave Concepcion, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez were on fire, winning the World Series two years in a row – 1975 and 1976.
When Don was a kid – before he became an Indians fan – he loved the Reds. He went to his first Reds game when he was nine, and it was also his first night game. He remembers how amazing it was to watch baseball being played under the lights.
Watching the game yesterday brought back lots of memories of that fantastic Reds team, one of baseballs’ best.
Today, Don went to his treasure box of goodies and got out a few souvenirs from that game. The program looks like brand new – that kid took really good care of his baseball stuff!
Nine year-old Don got two other great souvenirs that day. How cool is this Reds trophy that says “I’m a Reds Fan”?!
And, every kid has to have a plastic Reds cap!
Maybe one of Don’s best treasures was this Cincinnati Reds record. I asked Don what songs are on it. Good question, right? But, there aren’t any songs on the record. It is recordings of the actual game broadcasts – highlights of the 1976 season. This record even still has the plastic on it!
If the regular baseball season was being played now, we never would have watched the final game of the 1975 World Series, and we would have missed out on all these great memories. The 70’s were the best time to be a Reds fan and Don has the trophy to prove he really was one. Thankfully, at some point Don turned into a diehard Cleveland Indians fan, making it possible for us to be a couple!
